Chapter Thirteen

Sunday arrived way too fast. Their short vacation to Hilton Head had been fun. Devan and Alex got to know Amanda, the woman who’d managed to capture Lena’s heavily guarded heart.

Devan groaned as she hefted one of Alex’s two suitcases into the cargo bay. “I don’t think you took this much luggage to Paris.”

Alex smirked. “One must always be prepared.”

“It’s the beach. Shorts, T-shirts, swimsuit, surfboard. What more do you need?”

Clyde and Christine came out of the office looking refreshed and tan. “The flight plan is filed. We have clear skies all the way home.”

Christine spotted Lena. “How’s your head, sweetie?”

Lena reached up and touched her head. “A bit sore, but it’s good.”

Clyde patted her on the back. “Try to keep from bouncing off my ceiling on the way home, okay?”

Devan strapped down the luggage and closed the cargo bay door. “Her head is so hard I’m surprised she even bled.”

Amanda laughed. “I think she’ll probably follow orders and keep her seatbelt fastened on the way home.”

Devan shadowed Clyde as he completed the pre-flight check and walked around the plane. “Whatcha looking for?”

He studied the landing gear, the tires, then ran his hand along the leading edge of the wing, then the wingtip. “It’s just a routine pre-flight walkabout.”

Devan ran her hand over the leading edge of the wing. “It’s weird to think how these things get into the air. Feels like they’re made of aluminum foil.”

“You’re not too far off. Lightweight aluminum, a few thousand rivets, a little of this, a little of that, and a whole hell of a lot of wire.” He checked the cargo door latch. “Sometimes I wonder the same thing about those huge C-17 Globemasters. Fully loaded, they’re half a million pounds of dead weight screaming down the runway.” He stopped at the side of the plane and examined a tube mounted on the side.

“What’s that? An antenna?”

“No. Pitot tube. Measures airspeed, altitude, and alt trend.”

“Does it cost a lot to learn how to fly?”

“It can, but there are a lot of good private instructors around Fort Meade that don’t charge an arm and a leg. Why? Are you interested in learning?”

“I’ve always wanted to, but I think Alex would kill me or kick me out if I actually did it.”

“Well, if you decide to, let me know. I’d be happy to teach you.”

“You’re a flight instructor?”

“Sure am.” He tipped his head toward the plane. “You won’t learn on this one. I have a single-engine Cessna that I use for flight lessons.”

“How long does it take?”

“Depends. Anywhere from forty to seventy hours, but I’d wager you could probably do it in the low end. Tell ya what. If you’re really interested in learning, give me a call the next time you have a day off, and it’s clear out. Your first lesson is on me.”

Devan beamed. “Cool, thanks. I will.”

Janie was reviewing a case file when Peter Richardson tapped on her door. “Hey there. What are you doing working on a Sunday?”

He stepped into her office.
